ALMOST ROAD KILL

I always come upon dying animals in the road. Not dead animals, but DYING ones. In my lifetime,  I've witnessed the death of a raccoon, two squirrels, an opossum, three birds, and two cats. All of them were looking into my eyes as they died. Sometimes I ask myself, "Why me?" But I  already know the answer. It's because I care. The last thing they see on this earth is the love in my eyes, and they feel comforted, knowing they are not alone.
Last week I was driving and came upon a little sparrow in the road. He'd been hit by a car. Two crows were circling in the air. They dove at him, trying to pick him up with their beaks. I pulled over and got out of my car. I stopped the traffic as I ran over to the little bird. One of the crows got a hold of him, and tried to lift him up. I waved at the cars to go around us. I yelled at the two crows. "Go away! Get out of here! You're not getting him!" I bent down and looked at the little guy. I spoke to him. "I'm here." I said. "I'm not leaving you." He looked scared and helpless. Half of his body was flattened to the pavement. I tried not to cry. I knew he was dying. He looked at me and I looked at him and I told him I loved him. Then his little eyes closed and he was gone. A car honked at me. I got pissed. "GO AROUND ASSHOLE!" I shouted at him. I think he called me a dumb bitch as he drove by. I wanted to shove his face through the windshield. I got a towel from my trunk. I tried to scoop up the little bird with the towel but he was stuck. It was gross. I had to peel him off the pavement. Then I put him in my car and drove to the woods and hid him under some leaves.
As hard as it was for me to watch the little bird die, I'm glad I was there for him.

At least he didn't die alone.
